About IceOtherm
Canadian Engineer and successful inventor of medical devices, John Saringer, began to study the effects of heat and cold for the temporary treatment of pain, in the early 1990's. He observed that there were many devices available on the market designed to provide some kind of sensory stimulation that will distract a person from their pain, or will interrupt the pain pattern. Noting that both heat and cold treatment products have been proven to be very effective sensory stimulators, he observed that "contrast therapy", or the sequential application of heat and cold, proved to be more effective than heat or cold alone. John Saringer's contribution to this field of investigation was the enhanced pain relief control that came from the "concurrent" application of heat and cold.
After developing over twenty prototypes John Saringer arrived at the optimum combination of heat (around the perimeter of the head of the device) and cold (on a small ceramic tile located at the centre of the head of the device). On May 13, 1997 John was awarded U.S. Patent # 5,628,769, Method And Devices For Producing Somatosensory Stimulation Using Temperature.
The innovation behind the IceOtherm
The IceOtherm is a class II medical device designed to engage the body’s natural healing abilities using both hot and cold stimuli. The interlaced hot and cold stimuli, induces a paradoxical burning sensation known as the Thermal Grill Illusion. The Thermal Grill Illusion has been known to scientists for over a century, and was developed and first studied extensively by Thunberg in 1896. In scientific research applications, the thermal grill is used to create harmless sensations of pain.
John Saringer, professional engineer developed the easy to use, easy to maintain, precision engineered IceOtherm. The IceOtherm is a hand held device which harnesses the Thermal Grill anomaly. By applying both mild heat and cooling to the areas of chronic pain, an intense stimulation is created (a paradoxical burning sensation), blocking and confusing the pain messages going to the brain. A ceramic core cools the center of the treatment surface to 25 degrees C cooler than the outside collar while the outer collar heats up to 42 to 48 degrees Celsius. The unit takes approximately 5 minutes before the collar warms up to reach peak therapeutic levels.

Clinic studies
Initial Clinical Results:
Preliminary study results showed that 70% of the participants experienced a positive benefit from the use of the Iceotherm. This compares with a 40% efficacy rate of common drug treatment. A further review of the results led to the conclusion that the Iceotherm worked best on localized and chronic pain (defined as two months of identified pain), and had little or no effect on diffused and acute pain.
Current Clinical Trials:
The company has received approval from Health Canada for a Phase II clinical research trial on the Iceotherm commenced in the spring of 2008 at a major universtiy teaching hospital in Ontario. Up to eighty patients are involved in this study with the results expected in 2009.
Future Clinical Trials:
A Phase III placebo-controlled study is planned for 2009. To generate the placebo device the cold ceramic tile at the centre of the Iceotherm will be de-activated. It is believed that the cold sensation generated by the ceramic tile has the greatest effect on the relief of localized pain.
About pain
Pain is an intensely unpleasant sensory response to a physical action or event that tells you something may be wrong in an area of your body. It is the nervous system's mechanism to alert your brain that action must be taken as quickly as possible to protect the body from continuing symptoms, to avoid undue harm and to alleviate the feeling.
Your spinal cord and nerves provide the pathway for messages to travel to and from your brain and the other parts of your body. Receptor nerve cells in and beneath your skin sense heat, cold, light, touch, pressure, and pain. You have thousands of these receptor cells. Most sense pain and the fewest sense cold. When there is an injury to your body (surgery for example) these tiny cells send messages along nerves into your spinal cord and then up to your brain. Pain medicine blocks these messages or reduces their effect on your brain.
There are 2 types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain is a symptom of a medical problem, illness or injury, and is only temporary, it doesn't last long and usually goes away as your body heals. Chronic pain is more than a symptom, it is an actual illness or medical problem that persists beyond the healing phase, usually three to six months. This type of pain does not respond to traditional medical treatment, such as rest, medicine, injections, physical therapy or surgery. With time, the pain may spread and increase in intensity.
